How outward and inward remittances are regulated in India, and what that means for the documents and declarations you are asked for.
An outward remittance is a transfer of money in foreign exchange by a resident in India to a beneficiary outside the country, for a purpose permitted under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Nepal and Bhutan sit outside this route. The transfer itself is made either as a wire transfer or as a demand draft.
What you can send, and what you have to prove, depends on two things: your residential status and the purpose of the remittance. Almost every question about documents traces back to the purpose you have declared.

The Liberalised Remittance Scheme was introduced on 4 February 2004 to let resident individuals transfer money abroad for permitted current and capital account transactions. Under it, a resident individual may remit up to USD 250,000, or its equivalent, during a financial year.
The figure is an annual, combined one. Money sent towards a university fee, foreign currency bought for a holiday and anything else drawn under LRS all count against the same USD 250,000 for that financial year.

Outward remittances are processed through dealers authorised by the Reserve Bank of India, and the authorisation is tiered. Business transactions relating to the import and export of goods and services are restricted to authorised banks. Authorised dealers of the money-changer category are permitted to facilitate outward remittances for a defined list of purposes, set out in the next section, all of which sit within the overall LRS limit.
Because the list is defined by licence category rather than by preference, the practical question for any transfer is whether your purpose appears on it and whether you hold the documents that purpose requires. Confirm both with our branch team before you commit to a payment deadline.

Whatever the purpose, a common core of paperwork applies. A transaction is processed only once the remitter's KYC has been verified in person at the branch against the original documents.

For a remittance made by an individual towards a private visit, the travel documents themselves carry the proof of purpose.

Education is the purpose our branches handle most, and the document that matters changes between a student's first remittance and the ones that follow it.

Every remittance is arranged in person at one of our three Hyderabad branches. There is no online booking platform; you bring the documents, our team verifies your KYC against the originals, confirms the applicable exchange rate and charges with you, and the transfer is initiated once the INR funds and the paperwork are both complete.
Because the document set is driven by the purpose you declare, the fastest way to avoid a second trip is to tell us the purpose when you first call. We will tell you exactly which of the lists above applies to you before you travel to the branch.
